Everything you need to know about Certified Nonsense

๐ŸŽฎ Gameplay

How do you play Certified Nonsense?

Here's how a round works:

  • Spin the Judge Spinner to determine the round type (Normal, Speed, Negative IQ, or PhD)
  • The Judge draws a Prompt Card and reads it aloud
  • Everyone writes their funniest answer within the time limit
  • Fold and submit answers to the center (anonymous!)
  • Place Power Cards face-down if you want to play one
  • Judge reads all answers and picks their favorite
  • Winner keeps the Prompt Card! Reveal Power Cards and resolve effects

The player with the most Prompt Cards at the end wins!

What are the different round types from the Judge Spinner?

The Judge Spinner adds variety to every round:

  • Normal (50% chance): Standard 60-second round. Write whatever nonsense you want!
  • โšก Speed (16.7%): Only 10 seconds to write! Trust your gut instincts.
  • ๐Ÿฆด Negative IQ (16.7%): Caveman-style, bone-headed answers only. Think stupid. Really stupid.
  • ๐ŸŽ“ PhD (16.7%): Fancy, pretentious, overly intellectual answers required. Channel your inner academic.
How many players can play?

Certified Nonsense is designed for 3-8 players. It works great with any group in that range, but we find 5-6 players to be the sweet spot for maximum chaos and laughter. With more players, you get more variety in answers; with fewer, rounds move faster.

  • Quick game (5-7 rounds): ~15-20 minutes โ€“ perfect for warm-ups
  • Standard game (10-12 rounds): ~30-40 minutes โ€“ the sweet spot

โšก Power Cards

What are Power Cards and how do they work?

Power Cards add strategic chaos to the game! Each player starts with a hand of Power Cards they can play during rounds. Here's how they work:

  • Timing: Place face-down AFTER submitting answers but BEFORE the Judge picks a winner
  • Reveal: Flip them over AFTER the Judge announces the winner
  • Important: The Judge cannot play Power Cards on rounds they're judging
What does each Power Card do?

There are 5 types of Power Cards (35 total in the box):

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ SABOTAGE โ€” Discard the winning answer. The Judge must pick a new winner. Has PRIORITY 1, meaning it cancels other Power Cards. If multiple Sabotages are played, they cancel each other out! Win bonus: Keep 1 card + steal 1 from the leader.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DOUBLE DOWN โ€” Bet on yourself! Revealed after judging. Win bonus: Keep 2 cards instead of 1.

๐Ÿ“ข ECHO โ€” Submit TWO answers on one slip (so no one knows you played it). Commit at round start.Win bonus: Keep 2 cards instead of 1.

๐Ÿ”„ CALLBACK โ€” Your answer must reference the previous round's winning answer. Can't be used on Round 1.Win bonus: Keep 2 cards instead of 1.

๐Ÿ˜ STRAIGHT FACE โ€” If you win, the next round becomes your SOLO challenge. You try to make the Judge laugh while everyone watches!Win solo bonus: Keep 2 cards for that round.

What happens if multiple people play Sabotage?

Multiple Sabotages cancel each other out! If two or more players play Sabotage in the same round, all Sabotage cards are discarded and the original winner stands. This creates tense moments where players have to guess if someone else might also be sabotaging!

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tips

Any tips for winning?

Here are some battle-tested strategies from veteran nonsense champions:

  • Stupid-sounding fake words almost always win. Invent glorious gibberish. "Flimborgle" beats a clever sentence every time.
  • Speed Rounds reward gut instincts. Don't overthink itโ€”your first stupid idea is usually your best.
  • Save Sabotage for crucial moments. Use it when someone's about to pull ahead, not just because you can.
  • Adapt to each Judge's taste. Some love absurdist humor, others prefer dark comedy. Read the room!
  • Echo is sneaky powerful. Two chances to win, and nobody knows you played it.
  • In PhD mode, commit fully. The more pretentious and verbose, the better.
